Dominate the Ring in Fight Night Round 4

Posted by dan November 13, 2009 13:58 EST

Boxing video games have always been wildly popular. Seriously, who doesn’t love a chance to beat up virtual opponents?

To emerge victorious, it’s important to enter the ring with a solid strategy in place. The days of button-mashing are long gone and it takes some serious skill to beat modern opponents. To gain the upper hand, pay attention to the following tips.

First and foremost, play to the strengths of your boxer. Your game plan should change based on your body type, along with the style your guy likes to fight. With burly, short-armed fighters, it’s imperative to stay on the inside, using quick, powerful strikes to rattle your opponent. Of course, that tactic won’t work with taller, outside boxers, who should stay farther away and use their reach. Similarly, a conventional fighter should set up bigger punches with jabs, while sluggers prefer to throw bombs and go for broke. Understanding the attributes of your boxer will provide a huge advantage inside the ropes.

Regardless of who you choose, there are certain tactics that work well in Fight Night Round Four. Each punching style is different, and a well-trained fighter knows exactly when to unleash the right one.

Let’s start with the jab.  It won’t do much damage, but it’s fast and keeps your opponent back. Landing these scores points with the judges and makes it tough for your foe to find their rhythm. It’s the quickest punch to throw, meaning you can thwart opposing hooks and uppercuts.

Speaking of which, both the hook and uppercut can be powerful if used correctly. Both are slower than the jab, but do plenty of damage when they connect. Hooks work well in combinations, while uppercuts are most effective as counter-punches. In both cases, it’s important to wait for the right moments, because a reckless attempt often lands you on the mat. You can throw the hook from farther back, while the uppercut will only work in close.

With counters, it’s all about the timing. Defensive actions like blocking and dodging will leave opponents open for a major blow, giving you the chance to take control of the fight. If you time your move properly, the camera will zoom in slightly on the opponent, while he pauses momentarily.  By acting quickly, you can land your counter-punch and dish out extra damage. Be careful, though, because dodging early will get you hit. Likewise, blocking and dodging simultaneously is far more effective than using just one.

For the best counter-punches, use the haymaker. This devastating blow is thrown by holding down RB and delivering an uppercut or hook. It’s incredibly risky and should be saved for the moments when your opponent is most vulnerable.  You won’t always land it, but it’s worth it when you do. Fights can turn on one huge punch, and the haymaker can be the spark you need.

Finally, here are some other tips to consider.

Everyone wants to go for the head, but it’s prudent to use a heavy dose of body shots. These don’t deal as much damage, but they drain your opponent’s stamina and create opportunities later in the fight. Fighters usually block their heads, making body shots, and body haymakers, easier to land.

On defense, keep your guard up. Unless you’re throwing a punch, there’s no reason to get caught with your guard down.

And if you’re falling behind, dirty tactics can do the trick. You can be disqualified for head-butts or low blows, but you also get away with them if used sparingly. They are tough to defend and do plenty of damage.

Lastly, it pays to land a barrage of punches in any given round, even if you aren’t dealing much damage. If you feel like you’re falling behind, end the round with a flurry and play to the judges’ favour. You can often win a round by connecting with more blows, even if they’re just weak jabs.

These tips are easy to learn but tough to master. Get the hang of each and you’ll be dominating opponents inside the ring. Head to Rivalspot now and aim for the knockout!
